Negeri Sembilan has a rich cultural heritage that is closely connected to the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia.
The Minangkabau
Also known as ‘Menonkobu’, derived from ancient Sanskrit that bears the meaning ‘Land of Origin’. They are an ethnic group from West Sumatra, Indonesia. They speak their very own Bahasa Minangkabau which is closely related to the Malay language - signifying deep cultural ties within the region.
Fireflies on Sungai Timun
A renowned firefly habitat! It offers visitors a view of mother nature with alligators and storks native to the area. Local fishermen will provide boating services, giving nature enthusiasts a chance to get up close and personal with its unique beauty and diverse wildlife.
De’ Sawit Pasoh
Ride on! The 2016 Jamboree Bike Race was held here, where participants zoomed through a 35 km track that features scenic views of palm trees. The event attracted over 500 participants who powered through exciting challenges amidst picturesque surroundings.
Negeri Sembilan State Museum
Where local traditions and culture are stored under one roof. It is built in the traditional Minangkabau architectural style and made entirely out of wood. The museum consists of three main buildings that one can tour around to see silverware, handicrafts, weaponry, wedding customs and more.
Gunung Datuk
A popular trekking destination that straddles the border between Rembau and Kuala Pilah. It was named after Datuk Perpatih Nan Sebatang, founder of the matrilineal customary state law Adat Perpatih, who organised a gathering of leaders here to elect the new clan chief.
Siew Pau
Cantonese for baked BBQ buns that originated from Seremban in the 70s. It was created by a woman who wanted to save her mother’s business by getting creative and taking the fillings from the chan pau and wrapping it up in pastry. The result? Golden, crispy buns filled with tender, sweet, slow-roasted pork with a syrupy blend of various sauces - quickly becoming a local sensation.
