For Hari Raya 2023, Loka Made brings to life the celebratory times of Hari Raya in the heart of Kampung through an illustration entitled 'Riang Ria Raya'. At its core, this beautiful place captures the essence of family togetherness, reflecting the cherished traditions and joyous times we share with our loved ones during the festive season.
As we gradually move past the pandemic era where state-to-state travel was limited, Malaysians can finally rejoice as balik kampung is once again on the agenda to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Come and relive the most nostalgic and cherished Hari Raya traditions that Malaysians hold dear.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri, also known as Eid al-Fitr, falls on the first day of Syawal, the tenth month of the Hijrah (Islamic) calendar. Muslims in Malaysia joyously celebrate this occasion following the holy month of fasting during Ramadan.
Muslims typically celebrate the season with family by driving back to their hometowns to pay respect to their relatives and reconnect through large reunions. It is also a time to seek forgiveness and strengthen bonds among relatives and friends.
One of the many traditions that came within this festival is the giving of “green pocket money” or “duit raya” to children. This is a tradition in which adults give money, usually in green-colored envelopes, to children as a way of wishing them well and celebrating the festival together.
One of the traditional rituals that take place in the cultural celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia is the "penyalaan pelita," which means "lighting the oil lamps." This ritual involves lighting small oil lamps and placing them around the house, typically made from clay pots, with a wick made from cotton or other materials. The lighting of pelita will reach its height on the 27th night of Ramadan, called the Tujuh Likur night. ‘Likur’ means a figure between 20 and 30, hence tujuh likur means twenty-seven.
No Hari Raya would be complete without all the delicious cuisine shared in the 'open houses' held almost in every residence. From buka puasa during Ramadan to the fabulous feast of Hari Raya, the act of cooking and sharing food brings people together. The men light up the charcoal in the outdoor stoves, while the women begin boiling the ketupat and preparing lemang, as well as other ingredients for the delicious feast. The whole family gathers and chats with each other while participating in the lengthy yet rewarding cooking process.
In traditional kampung communities in Malaysia, kompang, rebana, and gendang are commonly used in Islamic religious ceremonies and celebrations. These instruments are often played in ensembles or bands and are used to accompany singing and dancing, bringing a lively atmosphere.
During the festive season, these celebration musics are often performed together with several traditional Malay dances such as Tarian Zapin, which is performed by men and is characterized by fast-paced and energetic movements. Tarian Joget is performed by couples as it is met with smooth and fluid movements. Tarian Inang is danced by women as it is graceful and elegant, among many others. These traditional dances are common in Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations and are an integral part of the festive heritage.
Cahaya Ramadhan berlalu pergi,
Menyambut tibanya Aidilfitri,
Ampun maaf segala peri,
Semoga Ikatan kekal dihati.
Selamat Hari Raya! Maaf Zahir Dan Batin ✨💚
As the Chinese New Year approaches, Loka Made is reminiscing celebratory times and shared memories of the Lunar New Year in the heart of Kampung Baru through illustration.

Hola in the air! Receiving your postcard and reading through them was genuinely the highlight of our day at studio. For us, handwritten messages are bridges that connects us (more so when we are from different countries) by sharing thoughts, memories and moments. Only to find it later, among the clutter of our daily lives, every pen curve and stroke feels like a warm hug.
Every postcard we receive is unique. The way someone writes an R or a T when they are happy or sad. Clean handwriting or cursive; postcards are decorated with stickers or minifigures. Sometimes Loka receives postcards of their own design too. It’s a gift to see how each postcard portrays its sender’s emotions and personality at the time of writing.
We started this program on October 9, 2021, truth be told we were nervous. Would people like this idea? Would they participate in this program? Are they willing to be vulnerable just as we are with them? There were a lot of questions in our mind but when we received the overwhelming response, we knew at that moment. This. is. It.
We created exclusively designed postcards along the season that our penpals from the group could re-experience the joy of swapping postcards, accompanied with messages from Loka that possibly enlighten their days.
Here’s a peek at our exclusive design of the month:
With the success of Postcard Swap with Loka that ran this whole year of 2022, we want to extend our arm and say, thank you! Thank you for the amazing stories, wisdom and hopes. We read, we listen, we grow and move forward side by side with the people who are part of this journey. Through your postcard, we are able to live a thousand different lives from the good, to being anxious waiting for results, to new chapters of your lives, to the sadness we experience as we grow to where we are now.
#PostSwapWithLoka is still ongoing, feel free to join and be part of this amazing journey. Here’s how you can get started!

]]>November’s been a blast for us! There have just been so many things in our lineup and we can’t wait to share more with you 💙
One of our recent collaborations was with Coway Malaysia! (You may have heard us on the news). We are honoured to have been selected as a partner in their first-ever hybrid run called Unite to Create.
The race began virtually and ended on-ground at Dataran Putrajaya early this month. During the virtual runs, participants were encouraged to create unique GPS trail art via the fitness tracking app, Strava, and share it with the world as seen with the hashtag #CowayRun2022 across social media.
We were honoured to create a visual for Coway Malaysia’s 2022 run. That’s when Loka and team got a brilliant idea 💡
We created a huge canvas consisting of iconic buildings across the nation. And to bring the theme to life, we passed the brush to the marathon participants so they too could join in the creation of our artwork called ‘The Sky of Malaysia’!
Participants were invited to unleash their creativity and leave their marks
on the blank space above the buildings.
Co-created masterpiece, 'The Sky of Malaysia'
We created a second visual called ‘The Batik Turtle’ to capture the essence of Malaysian culture. It is also based on a track from the virtual run and we thought it was pretty fitting! Seeing as it is an iconic wildlife that is commonly found in our waters.
The Batik Turtle carries on its back what makes us Malaysia truly a multicultural nation 🐢 From our cultural heritage (namely instruments!) to our iconic architecture and the nation’s natural beauty. It’s also stylised with traditional batik mixed with Iban tattoo motifs to showcase our country’s artistic diversity.
Carrying our colourful culture on its back!
Different yet harmonious and united. This design represents how we may be of different races, cultures, beliefs and even practices, yet we can still stand united together as Malaysians.
Our stories don’t just end there! Both artworks are also available for sale physically and digitally through NFTs. That’s right, we took our participants’ physical artwork and turned it into digital art - and they’re available on OpenSea!
All profits will go towards our NGO partners, namely:
Mercy Malaysia
EcoKnights
Reef Check
Happy Water Project
Nicol David Organisation
If you’d like to leave your mark on building a better Malaysia, we’re more than happy if you could support us! After all, every Ringgit counts in the bigger picture.
Visit our Instagram to check out what went down at the Unite to Create event earlier this month 💙 Till then, see you soon!
Life is a journey of never-ending progress
Since 2014, we’ve been on a journey to capture a little piece of Malaysia in the year and tell her story with our art. And it’s been quite the journey! We’ve seen the evolution of her skyline against the backdrop of our daily activities, and this inspired our Merdeka 2022 artwork theme, "We rise higher when we work together."

To celebrate their new mission, Spritzer switched up their looks to a trendier, more iconic design - featuring bolder colours, an ergonomic grip, and 100% made from recycled plastic packaging! You can now totally tell it’s a Spritzer even from a distance.
But what’s a celebration without a memento to remember it by? Loka got buuuuusy with his friend from the rainforest to create a whimsical artwork that flows with Spritzer’s new mission.
Quiz Time! Can you name 3 animals in this visual?
As Spritzer’s refreshed purpose revolves around nature, we created a design that conveys just that! And what’s a nature piece without our friends from the Malaysian rainforest? We completed our ‘little rainforest’ with local flora and fauna - thank goodness Loka’s friends were in town for a little photoshoot 🙊
Did you score one of these? Strike a pose, snap a pic and tag us @thelokamade 💕
Noticed how our weather has been even more unpredictable lately? When it rains, it pours, but when it’s sunny, it’s scorching! On top of that, more natural disasters are happening all around the globe, and our nation hasn’t been spared from it either with serious flooding issues happening almost monthly.
We dug around a little and found a 2019 study by WWF stating that Malaysia ranks #2 in Asia for annual per capita plastic use with 16.78 kg per person 😱 This means we’re the second highest in plastic consumption per person in all of Asia! Our plastic consumption is higher than that of China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
If you think about it, 2019 was pre-pandemic, which means those numbers have only been going up! After all, we relied heavily on tapau packaging during the lockdown, and have also increased the use of disposable face masks and gloves to protect ourselves since. We can’t turn a blind eye to our actions anymore especially since its effects are disrupting our everyday lives.
“Little-little, long-long become hill” 😉 If you get what we mean!
You may think it’s just one bottle, but the more people do it - the impact is so much more significant! Let’s take a look at what happens when we recycle.
👣 Helps reduce your carbon footprint!
Manufacturing something with recycled plastic uses up to 88% less energy and resources, as the raw materials have already been processed in the first round! This reduces greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption - therefore, bringing down the temperature.
🗑 Reduces the size of our landfills
There are approximately 7.8 billion people in the world! A growing population contributes to growing landfills. So much so that countries are even passing their waste to other countries that are willing to take payment (talk about one man’s trash, is the next man’s treasure!). And for the plastics that don’t make it to the landfills, they end up in our oceans! Did you know? There’s actually a Great Pacific Garbage Patch found in the North Pacific Ocean. Just heaps of garbage (plastics especially) floating there.
🐳 Protects our environment
Since recycled plastics are already processed, this reduces the demand for raw materials (water, petroleum, natural gas and coal) which in turn, reduces carbon emissions! Giving a new life to plastic also means we can help keep them out of our oceans, rivers and most importantly, rainforests - the source of Spritzer's silica-rich mineral water! And this is absolutely crucial as water is life and all living things depend on it for survival.
Here’s a fact: Humans can survive up to 6 weeks without FOOD, but only ONE week without water 😱
The journey towards a sustainable future begins with actively choosing to lead a greener lifestyle. Even a simple act of recycling a bottle is enough to start the chain! That’s why Spritzer is committed to using only recycled plastics in their materials while still providing healthy and safe drinking water for all.
It’s hard to believe that every little act we do counts in the big picture of saving the world, but as cliche as it sounds - it does! If anything, your actions will always inspire someone else, so if you want to be an influencer, it’s your chance to shine as an eco-influencer 😉
Ever noticed how people have started bringing their own bags when they check out of the supermarket? Or even bring their own bekal when they tapau food from hawker stalls? It didn’t use to be this way, but it has slowly become a thing! And it’s a great thing.
It’s called an eco journey because like all journeys, it’s gotta start somewhere! And we’re proud to be a part of Spritzer’s next green chapter. If you have snapshots or memories from the event at Sunway Pyramid this month, be sure to tag us on our socials @thelokamade! We’d love to see you rocking our latest artwork.
And if you have any interesting eco facts that you would love to share, comment below 👇🏻

Did you know? 🧐
The Malay community is known to be among the best sailors in history! With a track record of travelling far and wide along the Malay Archipelago. Their ancestors were said to have travelled as far as the Polynesian Islands and then to Madagascar and later on, the West Coast of Africa. In fact, it is said that their descendents still inhabit these places to this day.
Back in those days, sailors and fishermen used boats made out of wood. They were meticulously handcrafted and then adorned with beautiful, hand painted visuals for protection at sea. Unfortunately, after the second World War, many sailors swapped their wooden boats for more modern, mechanical boats as they were cheaper and more convenient to use.
Today, the number of wooden boats out at sea have gone down significantly, as there aren’t as many boatbuilders left. This has also caused its prices to skyrocket, leading to the lack of orders or the need for it as there are cheaper alternatives available.
So, what’s so special about these boats?
Aside from its beautifully handcrafted finishes, the traditional Perahu (boat) was designed based on beliefs from the community in the past! Here are 5 things we learned about the Perahu that we think you love to know too 😉
Each vessel has a Bangau and Okok
These are wooden pieces at the front of the boat that function to support the sail, balance the boat, and help draw fishing nets in. The Bangau is placed on the left side of the boat and the Okok, on the right. While they may have practical functions, this didn’t stop the craftsmen from flexing their artistic skills when it came to designing and carving ornate motifs on them!
Wait, Bangau as in ‘Bangau’?
It’s a bird, it’s a plane - no, it’s really a bird! That’s right, the Bangau was shaped after the bangau (English Translation: Egret or Crane). And the Okok is actually designed to be the tail of the crane. ‘Why bangau tho’ you ask? Well, the Malay community believe that they give sailors good luck at sea! This is because of the bird’s love for fishies. It was also believed that a motif of the bangau had a spirit and that it would keep them safe on their voyages.
The heart of the perahu
While the Bangau and Okok’s ornate beauty caught viewers' eyes, there’s another part of the boat that’s even more important to the sailors and the fishermen. It’s called the Caping. The Caping is shaped as a betel leaf and has plant motifs carved into it. It’s also permanently attached to the keel of the ship and was often described to be like a Banyan Tree, which was sacred to the community. Back then, it was believed that the Banyan Tree was home to guardian spirits, and having it in the form of the Caping served as protection and the safety guardian for the whole crew on board!
Blessings at sea
In the past, people believed that every object (animate or inanimate) possessed a spirit. The fishing community believed that the friendly spirits of the sea and sky hovered above the Bangau. So, most boat owners would hold blessing ceremonies at least three times a year for the safety and protection of their crew. The ceremony would be conducted by a bomoh and the ritual would involve both the Bangau and Okok. They would be anointed with oil, covered with face powder and had a garland with fragrant flowers placed upon them.
Of colours and culture
Out of all the wooden Perahus, the kolae boat remains the most unique with vibrant colours and intricate designs all over. The lower part of this boat is usually painted in red and it boasts beautiful paintings of flowers and the traditional Thai Kanok (flame-like) patterns that are usually painted by hand by the boatbuilder themselves. The only exception to how they could decorate their boats was that they weren’t allowed to paint visuals of humans or animals, as it was against their Islamic beliefs to do so.
Our nation has never been short of talented craftsmen, from past to present. And to celebrate the wonderful heritage of boat-making, we’re releasing our latest Perahu Payang postcard special. Inspired by the treasure trove of knowledge from encyclopedias and a boat craftsmen’s careful attention to detail, our latest design takes you on a voyage behind the scenes of traditional boatbuilding. Collect them all today!

What kind of coffee drinker are you? 🤔
Let’s play a game of Brews Clues to find out more about what your favourite brewing method says about your personality.
Instant Coffee
You like things done quickly and efficiently! You always get the job done no matter the weather. You may come off a little bold to some, but that’s only because you’re not their cup of tea. You tend to favour logic and practicality over creativity, and you tend to get stuck in your ways.
Drip Coffee
You believe that great things take time. And that slow and easy is what wins the race! Ever the optimist, you move to the beat of your own drum and make it a point to stop and smell the roses throughout your journey. Because what’s life if you don’t take time to enjoy it, right? Patient and dependable is how your friends would describe you.
French Press
You have exquisite taste. You treat coffee like it is an art form (and if we’re being honest here, it really is). Attention to detail is what you strive for. You treat every cup with care and love, taking time to understand its complexities and what makes each bean different. You may come off as a snob to some, but that’s only because you know how to appreciate a well-made cuppa.
Coffee Pod Machine
Exciting, quirky and #trendy. You LOVE experimenting! Whatever’s new or odd in town, you’ll be the first in line to try it. Open-minded and carefree, you believe that variety is the spice of life. That’s why you’re always up for new flavours and adventures. Never one to settle, you always believe that the next big thing is just around the corner. The avant-garde artist among your group of friends, oftentimes you find yourself struggling to fit into new environments.
Cold Brew
You are a blend of patience and boldness. You’re known to be confident and outspoken - someone who turns heads when you enter a room. Yet you can easily empathise with just about anyone. You’re a sweet summer child with an infectious smile! You love travelling (especially to the tropics). And whenever you visit a colder destination, your sunny disposition is all that’s needed to keep your company warm.
Matcha
You’re not everyone’s cup of tea and you’re totally okay with that! You live life on your own terms and appreciate me-time. You like peace and quiet, and are very in tune with yourself. You’re versatile in nature and are quick-witted. Despite your preference for alone time, you can easily get along with just about anyone! In fact, you tend to bring out the best in people and that’s why you’re so widely adored.

Deemed the largest flower in the world! The Rafflesia can grow up to 3 feet wide and weigh up to 11 kg. But it’s a pretty shy flower though 🤭 It takes up to 9 months just to spring from a seed to a pod and it only stays in bloom for a week (maybe less!).

Answer Sheet 📝

]]>Thank you for trusting us with your stories, wisdom and hopes! Much like Loka, we look forward to opening our mailbox everyday. Reading each and every one of your postcards makes us feel like we’ve been living a hundred different lives - all from the comfort of our studio.
Now that we have collected so many beautiful postcards and messages, we’ve been on the lookout for creative ways to display them all! We searched high and low for ways to showcase each of their unique designs and colourful stories. We felt like we needed to do them justice because they were all so special and meaningful to us.
So, we thought of sharing some of our favourite display ideas with you! Just in case you too, wanted to show off your stellar collection. Without further ado, let’s begin!
(Source: Natalie Talbutt)
Stay inspired throughout your day with a tabletop display! Just arrange your postcards on a table surface and cover it up with a glass (or plexiglass) sheet to keep it safe from stains and damage.
Source: homedit
Create your own wall art by sticking postcards with wall-safe tapes! Alternatively, you can also use washi tape (to avoid ruining your walls). You can get creative and arrange them in various shapes and patterns - or make your own feature wall!

(Source: Man Made DIY)
You’ll have to knock in some nails for this one. Once you’ve done that, tie a wool string around them and secure your postcards with a wooden peg. You can even get creative and make geometric shapes for an added flair!
(Source: Good Home Smart)
Or even swap the wool string for fairy lights for a more magical atmosphere.
Keep your guests occupied with your postcard collection in the A6 Size Postcard Album! Its highly transparent pockets allow for easy viewing while keeping them absolutely safe from stains, water or tear. Alternatively, you can use the A6 Size Ring Binder Postcard Album which allows you to refill the pockets when you run out of space.

Hang up your favourites in photo frames! Have one-too-many postcards? Opt for a shadowbox display! Compile your postcards and put them into a shadowbox as pictured below. You can easily compile and arrange your collection based on countries, themes, year received, or just mix them all together. Rojak more fun, right? 😛

]]>I still remember the day I opened my letterbox and saw a colourful A6 card staring back at me. I wasn’t expecting any mail, so when I flipped it over and saw my name on it - I was a little surprised. It was a postcard from my university classmate - all the way from Taiwan. She had been travelling a lot at that time and decided to send me a surprise.
The postcard contained details about her encounters with Taiwanese street food and the magnificent views of the city. She told me that I would love it there and that if I had the opportunity someday, I should pay Taiwan a visit. That one gesture was what inspired me to start writing postcards to my friends when I’m on my travels.
Writing postcards made me feel like I’m sending off a piece of my adventure to someone back home. I guess you can say that it’s like I’m sharing a ‘secret’ with someone because no two postcards are ever truly the same - even the postage stamps, markings, and weather stains are unique to each! Besides, nothing beats knowing how excited the receiver will be when they finally see it in their letterbox. I know I’ll never get bored of seeing a new postcard in there! 🤭
What warms my heart the most about postcards is its ability to connect people. I’ve only ever met my classmate’s mother in passing, when she had dropped her daughter off for class. Some time later, I bumped into her mother at an event and I introduced myself, saying that I know her daughter. When she heard my name, her face lit up as she remembered seeing my name on a postcard addressed to her daughter - “I remember you! I’ve seen your name. My daughter was really happy when she got your mail”.
Isn’t it amazing how a simple postcard can be a link between two strangers?
In a day of digital text messages, 30 seconds long video stories, and targeted marketing email spams - I’ve grown to miss the personal touch of a handwritten message (more so when it arrives from overseas). Sure, most messages on screen may be written for you, but it cannot contain the same warmth of someone’s distinct handwriting, nor will it hold the exact emotions and personality of the sender.
As World Post Day approached, we decided to get busy in our humble studio. Gathering with our team to put together a little initiative that will help everyone re-experience the joy of swapping postcards - especially in a time where most of us are not able to freely travel as much as before.
Postcards are like physical pieces of our memories - little time capsules of adventures that we share with our loved ones. Reading them always makes us feel like we’re experiencing someone else’s adventure. Now that most of us are ‘grounded’, we’re more than delighted to fuel our wanderlust with your postcards and stories through our #PostcardSwapWithLoka initiative!
All you have to do is send us a postcard and we’ll have our adorable responder, Loka, write back to you. The best part of this initiative? It’s absolutely free for you to join! You’ll only have to spend 30 sen on postage fees.
So, how do you get started?
1️⃣ Fill in your details into this form
2️⃣ Send Loka a postcard (any postcard you’d like to swap with us!)
3️⃣ Loka will write you back once we’ve received your mail
4️⃣ Repeat from step 1 to do it all over again 😉
We’d really love to receive your unique postcards and read all about your exciting adventures, your dreams, or even sage advice! It doesn’t matter if your postcard contains a recent experience or an old one - we don’t discriminate against memories. Heh.
In return for sharing your adventures, we’ll get Loka to help us respond to all your messages with our limited edition postcard swap designs. Yep, that’s right. You’ll receive a specially designed postcard that you won’t be able to purchase anywhere else. These are made exclusively for all who write to us! Here’s a peek at our design of the month:
[Limited Edition] World Post Day 2021 - LokaMade Postcard Design

National day songs are aired on local radio stations as red, white, yellow, and blue hues occupy public spaces. Our wish list grows with anticipation of the long awaited annual sale that’s scheduled to take place on the 31st day of the month.
Underneath these layers of festivities, we find ourselves asking: What actually comes to mind when you think of Malaysia? Food, a prevalent answer among the locals. While we cannot deny the prominence of our mouthwatering local delicacies (especially a fragrant plate of Nasi Lemak served with a generous amount of sambal on a cold day!), the past year and a half made us realise something else that makes us truly Malaysian.
But before we dive deep into our thoughts, we want to ask you - What do you think makes us Malaysian?
Our answer is really simple and we’ve seen it with our own eyes time after time. It is in the values we keep, as a person and as a society. These values are what drives our nation forward - making tomorrow a little better and a little brighter. Let’s take a closer look at what we believe these values are!
It’s no lie that Malaysians are some of the most generous people on the planet! They don’t hesitate to help one another, especially in times of need. We’ve seen it in full force in the #KitaJagaKita initiatives. Individuals, families, communities, even local businesses (who were also struggling from the pandemic) came together to help those in need. Many Malaysians also came together online to raise funds for care packages, ensuring that no one gets left behind at the height of the pandemic.
As the lockdowns extended, so did the extent of our care. The Bendera Putih initiative was introduced. People who were struggling financially were encouraged to raise a white flag in front of their homes, and aid came pouring in from neighbours, near and far! Small businesses and communities then came together to build food banks with daily necessities that were free for those who needed them - No questions asked!
What is life without laughter? Even when the going gets tough, Malaysians are never short on good humour or a witty remark. As we continued to stay home for months, Malaysians united over the the Internet, sharing memes and relatable reactions to the unending lockdown announcements and parliamentary turmoil. Though times are dark, Malaysians found solidarity in laughter.
Our local comedians then took the Internet by storm with parodies and hilarious commentaries on current issues, reminding us that we’re not alone in how we feel. In fact, our sense of humour dates back even before the pandemic! Just like how we collectively believe that the iconic Perodua Myvi has a secret built-in flying function. Even Myvi drivers are in on the joke and would playfully tell you so!
Malaysia is home to a melting pot of ideas, dreams, and innovations. All these stem from our diverse upbringing! We are so blessed to have been brought up in a multicultural society, where we are exposed to various beliefs, practices and ways of living. But ideas are meaningless without action.
Time and time again, Malaysians prove how truly remarkable they are by coming together and using their collective knowledge to build things. From towering skyscrapers that dot the skyline to state-of-the-art vehicles (some say can fly also!) to simple web applications, like www.kitajaga.co, that mobilises help in a pandemic. Our nation is where we are today because of all these brilliant individuals who came together to take action.
Inspired by the timeless tales of Malaysian values, we’ve captured the essence of what we believe makes Malaysia the nation we know and love today in this year’s Merdeka artwork entitled Generosity in Motion. We’ve even included some hidden surprises in the artwork, can you spot them?
Stay inspired this Merdeka with our limited edition Generosity in Motion series! Available in a bundle and individually.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned, being Malaysian is more than just having superb taste buds (hehe). It’s also having these wonderful values ingrained in us from young and to always look out for one another. As the saying goes, “berat sama dipikul, ringan sama dijinjing” which translates to sharing our fortunes and burdens together - to always help each other!
To progress as a nation is to take collective action together! And we’re where we are today as a result of a collection of actions from those who came before us and those who are still working with us towards a better Malaysia. May we never forget that Malaysia is a home that we are constantly building together. Selamat Hari Merdeka!

Caption: The artworks in Color of Scenery II draw inspiration from familiar everyday scenes in Malaysia.
For artist and Loka Made co-founder Fei Giap, it all started on a trip back to his grandfather’s sundry shop in Kuala Pilah, a small town in Seremban, Malaysia. Inspired by the sights, he created his first Colour of Scenery series. The digital artworks were done in a watercolour style and featured a blend of local elements in a fantasy setting. Despite the Malaysian elements, the ethereal, whimsical nature of the artworks resonated with people from all walks of life, with many international media sites and art forums sharing Fei Giap’s work.
The Color of Scenery II series, released in 2018, contains 18 pieces of original art prints, that bring back the same evocative spirit the original series was well loved for.
Caption: Good Morning Malaysia captures the contrast between old and new, with traditional shophouses and iconic national buildings in the background.
Some of Fei Giap’s favourite prints from the series include Good Morning Malaysia, which features traditional colonial shophouses, sundry shops and people going about their daily lives — juxtaposed against a backdrop of iconic buildings such as the Petronas Twin Towers and the Kuala Lumpur Tower. The contrast between tradition and modernity is a reflection of Malaysia as a nation, as we balance our culture and pay homage to our roots, whilst moving forward to a better future.
“Prior to starting Loka Made, I did not have many opportunities to visit Kuala Lumpur. It was only after (starting Loka Made) that I got the chance to discover more of the city. I find the old heritage buildings very unique, and I wanted to capture that in my drawings,” he says, adding that he hopes to offer the younger generation a new way of appreciating local culture.
Another print, Happy Snack Bar, draws inspiration from Fei Giap’s trip to Penang’s renowned Clan Jetties. The artwork perfectly captures the essence of one of the last original Chinese settlements on the island, featuring carefree girls in school uniforms relaxing outside a small sundry shop built on wooden stilts on the water front.
Fans might also notice that some of the works in Color of Scenery II share a common subject — cable cars. “When I was young, my dad brought me on a trip to Genting Highlands. I was fascinated by them. To my younger self, they looked larger than life,” says Fei Giap. He intersperses the machines into several art prints — including one where a cable car runs lazily through a street flanked by colonial shophouses — and also on the cover, which is designed to resemble a cable car.
As to what the Loka Made team hopes for their fans to take away from the series, co-founder Audrey shares, “Many of us like to watch anime and the beautiful Japanese scenery featured in films and animations, as it gives us a touching feeling. We want to show that Malaysia can also bring out that same touch,” she quips. “It is also our hope that people can take a break from the hustle and bustle of life, slow down and appreciate their surroundings.”

Just Want Coffee, The Factory
